Recently I had the opportunity to review new profile photos that TRUE members had submitted for approval. We receive thousands of photos every day for review, and I wanted to see what kinds of pictures were being sent in. What I discovered was this: There are about a bazillion amazing singles on our site, but many of you aren’t sending in photos that show how fabulous you are.

So I checked with our resident experts on profile photos –TRUE Customer Care. These folks review thousands and thousands of photos every day – so they know a thing or two about what makes a photo grab someone’s attention – and they gave me some great advice, which I’m happy to pass along to you.

The first step toward getting more winks and email is to have a great primary photo. Not just any old picture will do, though; a nice head shot – one that is clear, in focus and well-lit – is what will get you noticed. Studies have shown that photos that show your face are what will get you noticed. In fact, Evan Katz, author of the best-seller “I Can’t Believe I’m Buying This Book – A Commonsense Guide to Successful Internet Dating,” recently told Seduction Insider “Even though my business is all about writing the best profile, the one that’s going to make you stand out in a crowd, the most important thing is having a quality picture.”

Additionally, men should save pictures of that last hunting trip or your new bike for secondary pix. And likewise, ladies, shots of you and your pets – or you and your girlfriends – should be used as extras. Don’t use a picture of you in a Halloween costume or one that includes you and your ex. A good rule of thumb is to get friends or family members to help you select your primary photo. Oftentimes they are a better judge of what pictures show you to your best advantage.

1. Keep it simple. A nice clean shot of your face, without a cluttered background, keeps the focus on you instead of the scenery.
2. Keep it current. You may love a picture of yourself from 5 years ago, but potential partners want to see who you are now, not what you used to look like.
3. Keep it tasteful. Your profile photo actually works more like a resume, less like a Calvin Klein ad.
4. Show your eyes. Wearing shades can make you look shady.
5. Show your smile. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so show others that you’re open and friendly.
